Phoenix Ikner, the suspect in the mass shooting at Florida State University on April 17, has officially been released from the hospital and taken into custody. Authorities say Ikner, 20, faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder stemming from the incident, which left two people dead and six others injured.
According to reports, Ikner allegedly used a former service weapon belonging to his stepmother, a former law enforcement officer. He was shot in the jaw by police responding to the scene and subsequently spent nearly a month recovering in the hospital.
Due to his stepmother’s position as a deputy with Leon County, officials opted to transfer Ikner to Wakulla County Detention Facility to avoid any conflicts of interest.
The April 17 shooting shocked the FSU community and prompted increased campus security. Investigations into Ikner’s motives and background remain ongoing as legal proceedings begin to take shape.
