After nearly 22 years of connecting people across the globe, Skype has officially been discontinued. Microsoft announced that the move is part of a broader effort to simplify its communications offerings and put more focus on its Teams platform, which has grown in popularity, especially in business and education sectors.
Users will now be transitioned into Teams, with their chats and credentials migrating automatically for a smoother switch. Microsoft stated that Teams offers more robust collaborative features, better aligning with the company’s long-term strategy. Skype, once the go-to platform for video calls and instant messaging in the early days of online communication, had been gradually overshadowed by newer apps in recent years.
The shutdown marks the end of an era for Skype, which helped define online video chat for a generation before giving way to platforms better suited for today's remote work and virtual collaboration needs.
