Teen Arrested After Child Assault at Gwen Cherry Park

On July 8, 2025, northwest Miami‑Dade’s Gwen Cherry Park became the scene of a harrowing incident when 18‑year‑old Antwan Johnson allegedly lured an 11‑year‑old girl into a restroom and assaulted her. Quick action by bystanders enabled his capture, and he now faces serious charges.

During a youth football/cheer practice, Johnson asked the girl to pass toilet paper. He followed her inside a women’s bathroom, where he is accused of dragging her into a stall, choking her, and pulling down her pants. A woman entering the bathroom interrupted the attack and raised alarm.

Park-goers pursued Johnson as he fled. Some say he was subdued physically until law enforcement arrived . Authorities praised citizens’ bravery in preventing further harm.

The 11-year-old was quickly taken to a hospital, listed in stable condition. No additional medical updates have been released, in line with privacy protocols.

Johnson faces charges of:

Sexual battery on a minor

Kidnapping

False imprisonment

He remains held without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with a court date set for July 29, 2025. If convicted, he could face up to the death penalty.

Local residents and park users reacted with shock and grief. Many called for increased security and supervision of public facilities. Park officials mentioned reviewing restroom access and safety signage.

Sheriff’s office urges parents to stay alert. County parks department is reviewing restroom access during youth events, possibly launching background checks for volunteers and staff.

The incident sparks renewed debate on public safety measures in parks—whether physical modifications, adult presence, or surveillance are necessary to protect minors.

Johnson’s prompt arrest demonstrates effective civilian intervention and law enforcement response. The community is demanding better safeguards for children in public spaces as the court process unfolds.
