Family’s Cross-Country Journey Shattered After Father Detained in Controversial Florida Facility

Family’s Cross-Country Journey Shattered After Father Detained in Controversial Florida Facility

What began as a hopeful cross-continental journey for the Artese family turned into a devastating detour through America’s immigration detention system. In late June, 19-year-old Carla Artese and her family set off from Miami in an RV, planning to travel across the United States to California, pass through Mexico, visit relatives in Argentina, and eventually settle in Madrid, where Carla, born in Spain, was set to begin college.

Carla and her father, Fernando, were excited to document their travels on a newly launched YouTube channel called “Argentinomades.” With a logo already created and a roadmap in hand, the family expected adventure, not arrest.

Just hours after departing, their plans unraveled. Near Jupiter, Florida, law enforcement stopped their vehicle and took 63-year-old Fernando into custody over a month-old warrant for driving without a valid license. As an undocumented immigrant from Argentina, Fernando had skipped his court date, fearing potential detention by immigration authorities—an outcome that ultimately became reality.

After being transferred between several detention facilities and held for several days by federal authorities, Fernando was unexpectedly relocated to a newly constructed and secretive detention center deep in the Everglades—a state-run site unofficially dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”

A Facility Under Fire

The facility, located at the remote Dade-Collier airstrip, has been the subject of growing concern from legal advocates, human rights groups, and government officials. Reports from detainees and their families describe squalid conditions, including spoiled food containing worms, lack of clean water, continuous lighting that prevents sleep, extreme temperatures, mosquito infestations, and blocked access to legal representation.

Many detainees also report having no criminal history. Advocates claim the facility is detaining individuals solely for civil immigration infractions, raising ethical and legal questions about the nature of their confinement.

Although state officials assert the facility provides sufficient food, medical care, and religious accommodations, families and attorneys say otherwise. Some have described the site as an experimental environment with conditions that amount to psychological and physical mistreatment.

Political and Legal Backlash

Florida’s emergency authorities constructed the facility rapidly, positioning it as a solution for housing undocumented immigrants awaiting deportation. Officials have framed the site as a necessary measure to detain high-risk individuals. However, critics argue the facility lacks transparency, oversight, and basic human dignity.

Local and national lawmakers have demanded daily reporting, independent inspections, and full transparency. Environmental and Indigenous rights groups have also filed legal challenges, arguing that the site's construction and operation violated environmental regulations and endangered sensitive ecosystems in the Everglades.

A Family Torn Apart

For Carla, the experience has been emotionally devastating. “Since we moved here, I’ve always feared something would happen to my dad,” she said. “Now it has—and it happened just as we were chasing a new beginning.”

Instead of beginning a new chapter abroad, the Artese family is now entangled in a legal and humanitarian crisis. Fernando remains detained, while Carla, her mother Monica, and the rest of the family wait anxiously, caught between hope and uncertainty, in a country that promised opportunity but delivered fear.
