A woman identified as Ivana Gomez of Miami was arrested following a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in the early morning hours near Southwest 22nd Avenue and 7th Street in Little Havana. According to Miami police, 41-year-old pedestrian Katherine Kipnis was struck and killed at the scene. Authorities say Gomez was driving at high speed and had just been spotted by an officer moments before the collision. The officer, who witnessed the crash, attempted to intervene as Gomez fled the scene, eventually stopping at a red light.
Upon approach, the officer reported a strong odor of alcohol and observed that Gomez had bloodshot, watery eyes. She refused a field sobriety test and requested an attorney. Gomez was taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving death and resisting an officer without violence. A pending DUI charge will be determined based on toxicology results. She remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting bond determination.
