Two Miami-Dade County custodial employees assigned to the Port of Miami have been arrested in connection with the theft of public artwork valued at over $50,000. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began when port officials reported suspicious activity involving the disappearance of mosaic art installations from one of the terminals.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage, which showed the suspects removing multiple mosaic pieces, placing them into their personal vehicles, and leaving the facility while on duty. These pieces were part of a public art display designed to enhance the visual environment of the port and showcase marine life and local culture.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, issued arrest warrants for both individuals involved. They were taken into custody without incident. Authorities confirmed that all stolen artwork was located and recovered, though the motive behind the theft has not been disclosed.
Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating her office is committed to holding accountable any public employees who misuse their positions for personal gain. The investigation highlights ongoing efforts to protect public assets and maintain integrity within county operations.
