Former Major League Baseball shortstop Rafael Furcal, known for his time with the Atlanta Braves and a brief stint with the Miami Marlins, was arrested in Broward County this week on two felony charges. The 47-year-old from Weston turned himself in at the BSO Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to court records.
Furcal is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, linked to an incident that reportedly occurred Monday. Specific details about the confrontation have not yet been released, and Local 10 News has reached out to Sunrise police for further information.
Court documents show an attached warrant signed by a Sunrise Police Department detective but do not provide further context on what led to the charges. Furcal was released later that day on a $7,500 bond.
Furcal spent 14 seasons in the MLB, primarily with the Braves and Dodgers. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2000 and earned a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 2011. This is not his first legal issue—he was arrested twice for DUI during his career in Georgia, once in 2000 and again in 2004.
