A fire erupted Thursday at a scrap metal facility in northwest Miami-Dade, sending heavy black smoke into the air and prompting a large emergency response.
The fire occurred at Ferrous Processing & Trading Co. Miami, located at 3700 NW North River Drive. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed the flames originated from a large pile of scrap metal on the property.
More than 45 fire rescue units, including Hazmat teams, responded to the third-alarm fire. Firefighters used multiple hose lines, ladder trucks, and fireboats to attack the flames and contain the incident both on land and from nearby waterways.
No injuries have been reported. Authorities have advised people with respiratory conditions to avoid the area due to the heavy smoke.
Miami-Dade Transit officials noted that commuters may experience delays between Earlington Heights and the Airport Station as a result of the fire.
Operations at Miami International Airport, located west of the facility, were not impacted.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
